On this charity project at St Matthews C of E Primary School in Nechells we worked in partnership with the Birmingham office of Pinsent Masons LLP who commissioned us to supply and install a custom-made 5m hexagonal outdoor classroom, enabling the school to extend their learning facilities into the outdoor environment. The classroom was constructed with half shiplap timber sides, a decking floor and fixed bench seating sufficient to accommodate a class of up to 3o children. The roof was topped with a brush reed covering with heavy duty external grade plywood and waterproof membrane underneath. An easy access decking ramp suitable for wheelchair users was added to the entrance and this was flanked on either side by treated planters, supplied with geotex membrane liners and a topsoil plus compost mix filling with a selection of plants and shrubs.
Throughout the construction of the outdoor classroom we were joined by a regular stream of staff volunteers from Pinsent Masons LLP and this helped us to complete their project in record time! The Headteacher, staff and children at St Matthews C of E Primary School were delighted with the new outdoor classroom which is also used as a covered seating area for the children to sit and chat during break times. It has also served as a parents waiting shelter when the weather has not been good showing how versatile these outdoor classrooms can be.
Only the finest Scandinavian 5ths kiln dried redwood was used in the construction of the outdoor classroom, with radius corners to prevent splinter hazards, and treated with Tanalith® E, carrying a 15 year guarantee against fungal decay and insect attack.
