Delves Infant School gallery.
The Headteacher at Delves Infant School in Walsall asked us if we could undertake a site visit to look at a play area where they had a small agility trail. The trail had been installed into grass and over time, through regular and heavy use the grass had become patchy and in places very muddy and slippery, meaning the equipment could not be used by the children during the winter months. Our brief from the headteacher was to come up with ideas and suggestions how the whole area could be transformed into a versatile, all weather surface play area with the addition of some seating, an outdoor classroom and a storage unit.
Following our initial discussions with the school we set about transforming the area, giving them all of the facilities they were hoping for and at a very affordable price.
To achieve this we started by excavating the entire area and laying a sub-base of compacted MOT Type 1 road stone. On top of this we then installed black EPDM wet pour safety surfacing with a selection of coloured graphics to brighten the area. Moving on we built custom-made treated timber planters with attached bench seating and an outdoor classroom with easy access ramp, a decking floor, fixed internal benches and a feature brush reed roof with heavy duty external grade plywood and waterproof membrane underneath.
To complete the project we built and installed a custom-made Wendy house and storage facility, specifically designed to fit an awkward shaped corner which otherwise could not be utilised. The Wendy house was also topped off with a feature brush reed roof with plywood and waterproof membrane under and feature doors and windows. The use of two-tone wood stain finish added further to the visual appeal of the Wendy house.
