Hatherton Childrens Centre in Walsall had a small bit of ground in their outdoor play area which was not being used and which they wanted to be turned into a relaxing and quiet zone for the children to either sit and read or to undertake group role-play activities and performances. They had limited funds available to transform the area and asked us to come up with some tailor-made ideas and solutions which would help them to achieve their visions. Following an initial site assessment and meeting with Hatherton Children’s Centre management team we were able to accommodate their budget and requirements by designing and installing a custom-made timber outdoor classroom, complete with internal decking floor, half shiplap timber sides, removable low-level fixed bench seats and feature reed roof with heavy-duty exterior grade plywood and waterproof membrane underneath. This was flanked to one side with custom-made planters which the children could use for growing plants and herbs or simply for digging and getting their hands dirty. All of the equipment was constructed using the best Scandinavian 5ths kiln dried redwood, with radius corners to prevent splinter hazards and pressure treated with Tanalith® E, giving a 15 year guarantee against fungal decay and insect attack.
